CITB Site Safety Plus Mock Tests

CITB Site Safety Plus mock tests are timed practice papers for the SMSTS, SSSTS, HSA and temporary works course exams, each built to CITB's 2026 rules for that course.

Site Safety Plus is CITB's family of construction safety courses, from the one-day Health and Safety Awareness course for new starters to the five-day SMSTS for site managers. Each course ends with an exam, and CITB changed two of them in 2026: HSA in July and SSSTS in September. The table below shows how each exam is set and marked today. We are an independent practice site: we are not CITB, and we do not run or book courses. Practising for the CITB HS&E test instead? Start the CITB Practice Test.

What is CITB Site Safety Plus?

Site Safety Plus (SSP) is CITB's scheme of construction health, safety and environmental training courses, run by training providers under CITB's scheme rules, from the one-day HSA course to the five-day SMSTS.

CITB writes one set of principal rules for every Site Safety Plus course, plus an appendix for each course. The courses step up by role: new entrants and operatives take HSA, site supervisors take SSSTS, site managers take SMSTS, and directors take DRHS. Temporary works has its own pair of courses, one for the co-ordinator (TWCTC) and one for the supervisor (TWSTC). CITB requires every course and exam to run in English: "Interpreters and translators must not be used for any part of the course delivery or examination."

Is Site Safety Plus the same as SSSTS? No. SSSTS is one Site Safety Plus course; Site Safety Plus is the whole scheme. CITB writes the SSSTS name two ways, "Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme" and "Site Supervisors Safety Training Scheme". We use the first.

Five of these course exams can be practised here.

Which Site Safety Plus courses can you practise here?

You can practise five Site Safety Plus exams here: SMSTS, SSSTS, Health and Safety Awareness (HSA), Temporary Works Co-ordinator (TWC) and Temporary Works Supervisor (TWS).

The HSA course exam is not the CITB HS&E test: they are separate CITB exams. CITB's other Site Safety Plus courses, SEATS (site environmental awareness), DRHS (directors) and TSTS (tunnelling), have no mock test here.

How do Site Safety Plus exams work?

Every Site Safety Plus exam is a paper CITB selects, sat at the end of the course under examination conditions, and on most courses you must pass a trainer review before you can sit it.

  • CITB selects the paper. The provider learns the paper number when CITB accepts the course booking.
  • The exam comes at the end of the course, inside a fixed time limit.
  • A trainer review comes first on SMSTS, SSSTS, SSSTS-R, HSA, TWC, TWC-R and TWS. Fail it and you cannot sit the exam. SMSTS-R has no trainer review.
  • Course and exam are in English only. No interpreter or translator may help.
  • Reasonable adjustments are allowed, such as a separate room or having the questions read to you.
  • A re-sit always uses a different paper from the one you failed.

Each course sets its own re-sit score, shown on its mock page.

Can you do a Site Safety Plus course remotely?

Yes. CITB allows remote delivery of these courses, and a remote course must use an online exam tool. CITB also sells an HSA eCourse, a separate product whose exam Pearson invigilates online or at a Pearson test centre; the HSA mock page explains it.

SMSTS or SSSTS: which course is for you?

Take SMSTS if you manage a site and SSSTS if you supervise work on one: SMSTS is CITB's five-day course for site managers, SSSTS its two-day course for site supervisors.

Checked against CITB scheme rules appendices C and G, 25 October 2026.

This comparison is written and checked by the CITB Practice Test Team against CITB's scheme rules.

SMSTS is the management-level course of the two: it is longer, it expects you to run a site, and its exam carries more marks (32 against 30).

How long does a Site Safety Plus certificate last?

A Site Safety Plus certificate lasts five years, and you renew it by passing the course's refresher before it expires.

  • Refreshers exist for SMSTS (SMSTS-R), SSSTS (SSSTS-R) and TWC (TWCTC-R).
  • HSA and TWS have no refresher, so you retake the full course before the expiry date.
  • A refresher needs an in-date certificate. Once it lapses, you must take the full course again, and CITB states: "This is not subject to an appeal."

These rules cover every course on this page. An SSSTS certificate, for example, lasts five years, and passing SSSTS-R before it expires renews it for five more.

Are these mock tests real CITB exam papers?

No. Every question in these mock tests is written for practice, and none is a real or past CITB question.

CITB's own quality rules forbid it. Its Site Safety Plus Quality Assurance Requirements (May 2026) say: "The current exam papers must not be used as a mock test in any event." Old papers "must be destroyed and not used as mock papers in any event."

What our mocks copy is the shape of each exam: the number of questions, the marks, the time limit, the open-book window and CITB's published learning outcomes. Where a CITB paper has short written answers (SMSTS, TWC and TWS), our mock uses multiple-response questions with model answers instead.

You see every answer, with an explanation, at the end of each mock. We do not publish the question bank as a PDF.

Can you book a Site Safety Plus course here?

No. We sell practice only: we do not run, sell or book Site Safety Plus courses.

You book a course with a training provider, and CITB's Site Safety Plus course locator lists them. CITB's National Construction College also runs some courses itself.
