CITB Test Pass Mark and Results
The CITB test pass mark is 45 out of 50 (90%) on every paper: Operatives, Specialist, and Managers and Professionals.

That means you can get five questions wrong and still pass (citb.co.uk, checked 28 October 2026). The rule is the same in every version of the CITB Health and Safety Test. After the test you get a score report that says pass or fail and shows the subjects where you dropped marks. If you fail, you cannot sit the test again for 48 hours, and you pay the £23.50 fee again (CITB booking terms, checked 28 October 2026). The quickest way to know where you stand is a timed CITB Practice Test, marked at 45 out of 50 like the real one. Booked the CITB test for operatives? Start with that paper's mock.
Checked against citb.co.uk, 28 October 2026: 45 out of 50 (90%) to pass on Operatives, Specialist and MAP. Every test has 50 questions and lasts 45 minutes.
What is the pass mark for the CITB test?
The CITB test pass mark is 45 out of 50, which is 90%.
| Test | Questions | Time | Pass mark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operatives | 50 | 45 minutes | 45 (90%) |
| Specialist | 50 | 45 minutes | 45 (90%) |
| Managers and Professionals (MAP) | 50 | 45 minutes | 45 (90%) |
Checked against the CITB Operatives, Specialist and MAP pages, 28 October 2026.
That means you can get five questions wrong. A sixth wrong answer is a fail. CITB says the same 90% mark applies to each of the Specialist tests, whichever specialism you sit.
How do you get your CITB test result?
CITB gives every candidate written confirmation of whether they passed or failed, in a score report (CITB booking terms 10.1, checked 28 October 2026).
CITB's terms say you can open your score report again later through your online account (10.3). Keep the report safe once you have it.
You, or an employer, can look up an HS&E test result on CITB's Results Checker. You enter two details, and one of them must be your individual ID, registration number, CITB test ID or National Insurance number. For example, your surname and registration number, or your date of birth and National Insurance number. For help with what the checker shows, email [email protected] (checked 28 October 2026).
What does the CITB score report show?
Your score report says whether you passed and shows the subjects where you did not answer every question correctly, pass or fail (booking terms 10.1).
- Pass or fail. Written confirmation of your result.
- Areas of weakness. Any subject where you got a question wrong is flagged, even if you passed.
- Card information. CITB says the report "has important information on it relating to your card application", so keep it safe (CITB booking page, checked 28 October 2026).
After a fail, the flagged subjects are your revision list. After a pass, the same report is your route to a pass certificate.
How do you get a CITB pass certificate?
Your pass is recorded on your score report, and you can open it again through your online account.
- Log in to your online account.
- Open your score report.
- Save it or print it.
You can also order a duplicate pass certificate from CITB's Customer Service Team on 0344 994 4488. That costs £10 (booking terms 10.3, checked 28 October 2026). Employers can check your result on CITB's Results Checker, described in the results section above.
What happens if you fail the CITB test?
If you fail, you can book the test again, but not within 48 hours of the failed attempt (CITB booking terms 10.2, checked 28 October 2026).
- You pay the full fee again. A resit costs £23.50. How Much the CITB Test Costs lists every fee.
- Your result cannot be changed. CITB will not amend a result, but it can order a re-test if it finds the test was not run correctly (10.4).
- Complain within 15 working days. Raise a problem with the centre on the day. If that does not fix it, call 0344 994 4488 or email [email protected] within 15 working days of your test (11.4).
- A translator costs extra on a resit. CITB pays the interpreter's fee for your first test only (7.4).
CITB's booking terms set no limit on how many times you can sit the test. The one exception: a candidate who shows serious misconduct, such as cheating, may lose the right to sit again (11.1).
You can book again. Here is what to practise before you do: the subjects flagged on your score report. How to Book Your CITB Test covers the booking steps.
How long does a CITB test pass last?
A CITB test pass counts for a card application for two years: you must have passed within the last two years when you apply (cscs.uk.com, checked 28 October 2026).
CSCS, which issues the site cards, sets this rule. To apply more than two years after your pass, you need a new pass or an approved alternative to the test. CITB can also revoke a pass if it reasonably suspects you were linked to cheating or fraud (booking terms 11.1).
What mock test score should you aim for before booking?
Aim to score 45 out of 50 or more on timed mocks before you book, because that is the mark the real test needs.
One mock at 45 can be luck. A few in a row is a better sign. Time yourself too: 45 minutes for 50 questions is about 54 seconds a question. After each mock, practise the subjects you got wrong, then sit another. How to Pass the CITB Test sets out a revision plan. This is advice, not a promise of a pass.
