CITB Test ID Requirements
For the CITB test you need one original primary ID (a passport, a UK or European photocard driving licence, or an eVisa) or two secondary IDs, one showing your photo and one your signature.

Your ID must be the original, in date and in the name you booked with (CITB ID policy, checked 28 October 2026). If you arrive without accepted ID, you will not be let in and you lose the £23.50 fee. This page starts with your CITB test ID number, which is a different thing. Then it lists every document CITB accepts, what to do if you have none, the rules for under-16s and what else to bring. Check where you are going on our CITB Test Centres page, then sit a free CITB Practice Test so the ID check is the only nervous part of the day.
Checked against citb.co.uk, 28 October 2026: no accepted ID means no test, and the £23.50 fee is not refunded (CITB booking terms 6.3).
What is your CITB test ID number?
Your CITB test ID is a number that finds your test results on CITB's records, and it is not an ID document.
CITB's Results Checker groups it with your individual ID and registration number. Any one of these, plus one more detail, finds your record (CITB check-a-card page, checked 28 October 2026).
- When you book. You give your CITB registration number if you have sat an HS&E test before, or have applied for a CSCS, CPCS or CISRS card (CITB booking page). How to Book the CITB Test lists everything else you need to book.
- To check a result. On CITB's Results Checker, enter two details. One must be your individual ID, registration number, CITB test ID or National Insurance number. The other can be your surname or date of birth.
- Help with the checker. Email [email protected].
If this is your first HS&E test and you have never applied for one of those cards, the booking page does not ask you for a number. Cannot find yours? Check your score report and your booking emails. If it is not there, call CITB's customer service line on 0344 994 4488.
What ID do you need for the CITB test?
You need one primary ID, or two secondary IDs taken one from each list.
A primary ID must show your full name, a recognisable photo and your signature. An eVisa is the one exception, as it has no signature (CITB ID policy, checked 28 October 2026). If you have no primary ID, bring two secondary IDs: one from List A and one from List B.
Primary ID (one document)
- Passport (UK or international)
- Photocard driving licence (UK or European)
- eVisa, shown through View and Prove in your UKVI account
Secondary ID (two documents, one from each list)
| List A (name and photo) | List B (name and signature) |
|---|---|
| Non-UK and non-EU photocard driving licence | Credit card |
| Passport without a signature | Debit card |
| European national identity card | Paper driving licence issued before 31 March 2000 |
| CitizenCard or other proof of age card with the PASS hologram | |
| Young Scot card with the PASS hologram | |
| CSCS card or CSCS Partner card with the CSCS hologram | |
| UK Armed Forces ID card | |
| UK Armed Forces Veteran ID card | |
| UK Home Office Travel Document |
Checked against the CITB HS&E Test ID Policy, 28 October 2026.
Both documents must be valid. For example, a passport without a signature (List A) plus your debit card (List B) counts. Two cards from List B do not.
What rules must your ID documents meet?
Every ID document must be the original, in date, and in the same name as your booking.
- Originals only. No photocopies or digital copies. The only exception is an eVisa.
- In date. An expired document does not count.
- Your booking name. The name must match the name on your test booking.
- Changed your name? Bring an original document that links the two names, such as a marriage or civil partnership certificate, decree absolute or decree nisi papers, or a deed poll.

If the name on your booking confirmation is wrong, call 0344 994 4488 straight away (booking terms 4.1).
What if you do not have accepted ID?
If you have no accepted ID, bring a completed CITB HS&E Test ID Waiver Form with a countersigned photo (CITB ID policy; booking terms 6.2).
CITB says the waiver is only for exceptional cases, where you cannot provide the primary or secondary ID. The form must include a countersigned photograph of you and your signature.
- Download the waiver form from CITB's ID policy page and read the letter attached to it.
- Fill it in and bring it to the test with your booking confirmation.
Without accepted ID or a completed waiver, you will not be admitted and the £23.50 is not refunded (booking terms 6.3, checked 28 October 2026). Questions about ID go to CITB's Testing Customer Service team on 0344 994 4488 (6.4).
What ID do under-16s need?
Candidates under 16 bring a completed parental consent form and acceptable ID, or an Under 16 Confirmation of Identification Form if they have no accepted ID.
CITB's booking page links the parental consent form. The Under 16 Confirmation of ID Form is only for under-16s who cannot provide the required ID. It must be filled in alongside the parental consent form and signed by someone in a position of responsibility at the school or college you attend (CITB ID policy, checked 28 October 2026).
What should you bring on test day?
Bring your ID, your booking confirmation email or letter, and arrive at least 15 minutes before your test.
- Your ID, from the lists above.
- Your booking confirmation email or letter.
- Any forms you need: the waiver form, or the under-16 forms.
- Nothing else for the room. Phones, keys, bags, watches and wallets go in a locker, and you must not refer to any document during the test (booking terms 11.1).
Test centres cannot store large items such as luggage, work tools or bulky equipment. Bikes must be left outside at your own risk, and you cannot bring anyone into the centre with you (11.1). If you booked support such as a reader, it should show on your booking confirmation. If it does not, call the Adjustments team on 0344 994 4491 straight away (7.3). The CITB Health and Safety Test (HS&E) Explained covers the voiceover languages and other support you can book.
