CITB Practice Test

CITB Test Centres

You take the CITB test at a Pearson Professional Centre or a CITB-approved Internet Test Centre (ITC). You pick a Pearson centre when you book with Pearson VUE, and you find ITCs on CITB's ITC map.

Both run the same test: 50 questions in 45 minutes, with 45 out of 50 to pass. The difference is how you book and pay. You book an ITC directly with the centre, and CITB vouchers only work at Pearson Professional Centres. CITB lists its ITCs by nation and region: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Employers can also book mobile testing for a group. Ready to choose? How to Book the CITB Test walks you through each route, and a free CITB Practice Test shows whether you are ready.

Where can you take the CITB test?

You can take the CITB test at a Pearson Professional Centre or at an Internet Test Centre (ITC) approved by CITB.

  • Pearson Professional Centres. Pearson VUE takes CITB test bookings. You choose a Pearson centre when you book online or on 0344 994 4488.
  • Internet Test Centres. CITB says an ITC is "a centre approved by CITB to provide testing facilities for tests such as the Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test" (CITB ITC page, checked 28 October 2026).
  • Mobile testing. An employer can book a test session for a group, at a time and place it chooses. See the last section of this page.

You cannot sit the HS&E test at home. For the format and the rules on the day, read The CITB Health and Safety Test (HS&E) Explained.

What is the difference between a Pearson centre and an ITC?

Both run the same test. The difference is how you book, how you can pay and how you find one.

How do you find a CITB test centre near you?

To find a centre near you, search Pearson VUE's CITB centre finder by town or postcode, or search CITB's Internet Test Centre map.

Route A: a Pearson Professional Centre

  1. Open Pearson VUE's CITB test centre search.
  2. Type your town or postcode. Pearson lists the nearest centres. Its distances are straight lines and do "not reflect driving distance".
  3. Open "Test Centre Information" for directions, parking and access details, then book that centre with Pearson.

Route B: an Internet Test Centre

  1. Open CITB's ITC map.
  2. Find a centre on the map, or in CITB's list by location below the map.
  3. Contact the centre by the email or website CITB lists, and book with the centre.

CITB says not all ITCs are on its ITC map yet, so a centre near you may be missing from it.

Which areas do CITB's Internet Test Centres cover?

CITB lists Internet Test Centres in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and splits England into five regions, including London (CITB ITC list, checked 28 October 2026).

The Pearson notes below come from searches of Pearson VUE's CITB centre finder on 28 October 2026. Centres open and close, so check the live lists when you book.

England

CITB's list splits England into North, Midlands and East, South East, London and South West. Start with the region you live or work in, then check the map for centres near the region's edge.

London

CITB lists London ITCs under their own heading. A Pearson search for London showed Pearson Professional Centres in Southwark, Mile End, Southgate and Croydon.

Scotland

CITB lists Scotland's ITCs as one list. A Pearson search for Glasgow showed a Pearson Professional Centre in Glasgow, with others in Clydebank, Greenock and Stirling.

Wales

CITB lists Wales's ITCs as one list. A Pearson search for Cardiff showed Pearson Professional Centres in Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil. To book in Welsh, call CITB's Welsh booking line on 0344 994 4490.

Northern Ireland

CITB lists Northern Ireland's ITCs as one list. A Pearson search for Belfast showed Pearson Professional Centres in Belfast, Portaferry and Ballymena.

What should you check before choosing a centre?

Before you choose a centre, check how you will get there on time, what you can leave there, and whether it offers the support you need.

  • Travel time. Arrive 15 minutes before your start time. CITB gives no refund if you arrive late or miss the test because of bad weather or a transport failure (CITB booking terms, 5.1).
  • What you carry. Test centres cannot store luggage, work tools or bulky equipment, and cannot securely store bicycles. Small items such as keys, phones, bags, watches and wallets go in a locker (CITB booking terms, 11.1). Do not come straight from site with your tools.
  • How you pay. Paying with a CITB voucher means you must book a Pearson Professional Centre.
  • Support. If you book a translator, reader or reader-recorder, you get a separate room and extra time. CITB warns that waits for a test slot may be longer (CITB support page).
  • ID. Bring original, in-date ID in the name you booked with, or you will not be let in and you lose the fee. CITB test ID lists what counts.

Can a test come to your site?

Yes, for groups. CITB runs a mobile testing service: an employer books a test session and says when and where it wants it.

The employer fills in CITB's candidate information form, with each name exactly as it appears on that person's ID, then sends a booking request to Pearson. CITB asks for payment at least 10 days before the test date. The list of candidates cannot change in the last 6 working days. Read the mobile testing terms and the steps on CITB's About the HS&E test page before you book (checked 28 October 2026). Wherever you sit the test, practise first.
