Checked against citb.co.uk, 25 October 2026.

CITB updated the MAP test in June 2023 for changes to legislation, working practices and technology. CITB says the content is now "wider than previous versions" and "not role specific". So a weak section costs you marks even when your own job never touches it. This page lets you practise each MAP section and then sit a full timed mock. We are an independent practice site, not CITB. Sitting a different paper? Start from the CITB Practice Test.

What are the five MAP sections?

The CITB Managers and Professionals (MAP) test has five sections: A Legal and management, B Occupational health, wellbeing and welfare, C General safety, D High risk activities, and E Environment.

SectionWhat it coversPractise it
A: Legal and managementThe law, legal duties and how safe work is managedPractise Section A
B: Occupational health, wellbeing and welfareHealth risks at work, wellbeing and site welfarePractise Section B
C: General safetyEveryday safety on a construction sitePractise Section C
D: High risk activitiesThe work most likely to cause serious harmPractise Section D
E: EnvironmentProtecting the environment from site workPractise Section E

Section names as CITB writes them, checked against citb.co.uk, 25 October 2026. The middle column is our plain summary, not CITB's syllabus.

Each section mode draws its questions from the topics in our bank that match that section. A full mock takes 10 questions from each section, so one weak section shows up in your score by section.

What changed in the June 2023 MAP update?

CITB updated the MAP test in June 2023 to reflect changes to legislation, working practices and technology.

CITB says the updated content is wider than previous versions and not role specific. Every MAP candidate faces the same five sections, whatever their job title. Revise all five, not only the parts you use at work.

CITB tests you on the most recent edition of its revision materials. Check that your GT200 book or MAP app is the current edition before you revise. CITB may also reword a question compared with the revision materials, "however the meaning will remain the same". Learn why each answer is right, not the exact wording. The CITB pages we checked on 25 October 2026 name no update after June 2023.

Who needs to sit the MAP test?

The MAP test is CITB's HS&E test for managers and professionals. CITB points you to the Card Finder to confirm which test your job needs.

Your role decides which test you take, not which questions you see: the MAP paper is not role specific, so everyone who sits it faces the same five sections.

Check whether you need the CITB Specialist Supervisory Test instead when your job is supervising a team rather than managing a project. Supervisory (SUP) is one of CITB's 12 Specialist specialisms, sat as core questions plus questions on supervision.

What does the leadership and management topic cover?

Leadership and management questions ask what a manager or supervisor must do to plan, organise and check safe work, and who holds which legal duty.

Law or guidanceWhat our questions ask
Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (HSE guidance L153)Duty holders, the principal contractor, planning the work
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999Risk assessment and competence
HSE HSG65, Managing for health and safetyPlan, do, check, act
Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974General duties of employers and employees
HSE HSG245, Investigating accidents and incidentsWhat to do after an accident and how to find the cause

Five sample leadership questions, each with a worked explanation. These are written for practice and are not real CITB questions.

Sample question 1 · Leadership & Management (MAP)

Regulation 3(3) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 sets out when a risk assessment has to be reviewed. What are the triggers?

  1. Reason to suspect it is no longer valid, or a significant changeCorrect answer
  2. A reportable injury actually occurring to a member of the working gang
  3. A request from the client during a scheduled site progress meeting
  4. The passing of twelve months from the date the assessment was signed

Why A: Regulation 3(3) requires review where there is reason to suspect the assessment is no longer valid, or where there has been a significant change in the matters to which it relates, and any changes needed must then be made. It sets no fixed annual interval, and review is not made to depend on an injury happening or on a client request.

Sample question 2 · Leadership & Management (MAP)

A supervisor is himself an employee of the contractor. What does section 7 of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 require of him personally?

  1. Reasonable care for himself and others, and co-operation with the employerCorrect answer
  2. Personal public liability insurance covering the gang he is leading
  3. A recognised supervisory qualification before he can lead any gang
  4. A countersignature on the employer's written safety policy before work starts

Why A: Section 7 requires every employee to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of others who may be affected by his acts or omissions, and to co-operate with the employer so far as is necessary for the employer's own duties to be met. A supervisor carries this duty like anyone else, and turning a blind eye can breach it. The other options are not section 7 requirements.

Sample question 3 · Leadership & Management (MAP)

Regulation 13(3) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 sets conditions for the training it requires. Which condition does it impose?

  1. It must be delivered on a Saturday agreed between worker and employer
  2. It must take place during working hours and be repeated where appropriateCorrect answer
  3. It must be taken in the operative's own unpaid time after the site shuts
  4. It must be limited to the fortnight before a competence card is renewed

Why B: Regulation 13(3) requires the training to be repeated periodically where appropriate, adapted to new or changed risks, and to take place during working hours. Pushing training into a worker's own or unpaid time does not satisfy the regulation, and it is not tied to any card renewal cycle.

Sample question 4 · Leadership & Management (MAP)

Regulation 8(1) of CDM 2015 sets the standard a contractor or designer must meet before being appointed to a project. What must they have?

  1. Membership of a recognised trade federation plus three written trade references
  2. Public liability insurance at a level set by the principal contractor
  3. A valid competence card for the operatives they will bring on to site
  4. Skills, knowledge and experience, and organisational capability if a firmCorrect answer

Why D: Regulation 8(1) requires the skills, knowledge and experience, and where the appointee is an organisation the organisational capability, necessary to fulfil the role in a way that secures health and safety. Federation membership, individual cards and insurance may all be useful evidence, but none of them is the legal test set by regulation 8(1).

Sample question 5 · Leadership & Management (MAP)

Section 2(6) of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 places a consultation duty on employers. What is that duty aimed at achieving?

  1. A decision on which operatives will be released at the end of the contract
  2. Agreement on the hourly rates paid for hazardous work on the site
  3. Arrangements letting employer and employees co-operate on safety measuresCorrect answer
  4. A choice of supplier for the protective equipment issued on the site

Why C: Section 2(6) requires employers to consult safety representatives with a view to making and maintaining arrangements that enable employer and employees to co-operate effectively in promoting and developing health and safety measures, and in checking how well those measures work. Consultation is two way and about safety, not about pay, redundancy or purchasing.

The leadership questions are written and checked by the CITB Practice Test Team against the sources above.

MAP test FAQs

These four answers cover the MAP test's languages, where you sit it, CITB's MAP app and how hard the paper is.

Which languages is the MAP test in?

The MAP test has an English voiceover, and the on-screen text is also available in Welsh. Other help, such as a translator or a reader, is booked through CITB's Adjustments team on 0344 994 4491.

Can you sit the MAP test at home?

No. You sit the MAP test at a Pearson Professional Centre or an Internet Test Centre, like every CITB HS&E test. CITB also runs mobile testing for group bookings.

Is there a free MAP revision app?

No. CITB's MAP app costs £7.29, but CITB's 13-question sample test is free, and you can start a MAP mock here free. CITB prices checked 25 October 2026.

How hard is the MAP test?

The MAP test needs 45 out of 50, the same pass mark as the other CITB tests, and CITB says its content is wider than earlier versions, so practise all five sections.
